The website will be up-dated on a regular basis with information about events coming up such as community based seminars members of the public are welcome to attend. Definitely keep an eye out for these opportunities.
What should I do if my child is having difficulties in the area of literacy?
As a parent knowing what avenue to take can be confusing. When first starting out, it pays to build up a picture of your child’s strengths and weaknesses then begin ruling factors out that could be contributing to your child’s difficulties.
Auditory and visual processing plays a big factor in your child’s learning. It therefore pays for your child to have their hearing and vision checked. We have the services of a Doctor of Audiology, Angela Alexander who works for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and specialises in Auditory Processing Disorder. Even if your child's hearing is fine, your child still may be affected by this condition.
Knowing whether or not there are any contributing factors causing your child to have difficulties is a useful first step.
Assessment: Arranging for your child to have a comprehensive assessment is also important as this assessment will provide valuable information as to the cognitive and achievement factors that are contributing to your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Contact me for details on how to arrange an assessment.

This website is put together in a way that provides useful information not only for parents and caregivers but also for young people themselves.
The material presented about specific learning disabilities is designed for young people to be able to relate to - from providing examples of young people with specific learning disabilities to easy to understand information relating to the characteristics of these learning difficulties. What we hope to achieve by this is that the students will see for themselves they are not alone in facing such difficulties and that there is an explanation for the difficulties they are facing. For parents wanting further information, the name of websites and organisations that people can go to are also listed.
